It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner or an expert there are chess sets for everyone. The chess set is not only for playing but is also a work of art which people can admire. There are sets with beautifully hand craved pieces which have so much detail put into them. There are chess sets for playing as well as for collectors to put on display and admire. The materials used to make these sets are also limitless with sets available in copper, steel, brass, marble, stone, wood, bone, plastic etc. The varieties of material are endless. When buying a set you have to take into account your needs and budget. Whether you are going to collect it or play with it etc has to be considered.

If you with to travel and play chess at the same time then you can consider a portable chess set. These allow you to play chess on the move without the pieces falling all over the place. You can even play in a moving bus or car or plane without the pieces falling over. The chess pieces do not fall over because they have magnets in the bottom and they are placed on a magnetic board. The pieces are usually made of plastic with a small magnetic in the base of the piece. To move the pieces you have to apply a little force. If travelling and playing is your requirement then a magnetic set is perfect.

If you merely want a chess set for decorative purposes then there are many to choose form. Since the set is purely decorative the prices tend to be higher because they are made of more expensive materials like stone, crystal, bone etc. When buying a decorative chess set you only have to take into account your budget as you will not be playing on this set but only suing it for decorative purposes.

Collectable chess sets are even more expensive and have to be cared for really well. A collectable set appreciates in value over time and can be sold for a profit in the future.
